Hydroworks: Pelton Turbines
|
- The Pelton wheel was invented by Lester Allan Pelton in California during the gold rush of the 1870s.
- Pelton wheels are impulse turbines. The special design of the Pelton bucket turns an incident jet of water almost a full 180 degrees to extract nearly all of the jet’s fluid momentum.
- Numerous subtle modifications to the bucket and jet geometry over the 140 years since its inception have allowed well designed Pelton wheels to develop hydraulic efficiencies as high as 92 %.
- Hydroworks uses a state of the art bucket design developed by Norwegian expert, Dr Hermod Brekke. This allows Hydroworks turbines to achieve best-in-class hydraulic efficiencies for our customers.
- Hydroworks has designed and installed Pelton runners for the 32 MW Cobb Power Station in Golden Bay, New Zealand. At 596 m, Cobb is the highest head power station in New Zealand.
